Exclusive Excerpt! RUNAWAY by NIC STARR

I think most of you know by now that Nic is my bestie, so of course I’m going to have her on my blog. Especially when she has a fantastic new release!

Runaway

by Nic Starr

Part of Dreamspinner Press’ World of Love series.

Blurb

Dr Nathan Powell is ready to settle down near his family, and hopefully find the man of his dreams. He returns to the small coastal town where he grew up, but while life is simpler than it was in the city, there are also complications—like patients’ reactions to an openly gay doctor. And like running into Nate’s first love, Damien, an out-and-proud local business owner who is unwilling to be any man’s dirty secret. The reunion reignites old desire even while it stirs up Nate’s guilt over the way things ended with Damien.

When Nate’s nephew runs away, Damien accompanies Nate on his mission to find the young man. The drive to Sydney, and the search of the city, gives Nate time to reconnect with Damien—and to wonder if he made the right decision years ago—when he determined a future for them was impossible. Is a fresh start realistic for two men in their forties? But before he can ponder the second chance they’ve been given, Nate must locate his nephew.

World of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the globe.

A big thank you to RJ for hosting me today as I celebrate the release of Runaway, part of the Dreamspinner Press World of Love collection. The World of Love stories are “contemporary romances spotlighting the unique features, qualities and attributes of a specific country as well as the universality of love wherever it’s found.”

Nate and Damien had only just started to reconnect after many years of being apart when Nate’s nephew, Jackson, runs away to Sydney. The men travel to the city so they can be closer when Jackson finally gets in contact. Here’s an excerpt from a scene in their hotel room where Nate struggles to sleep.

Long Excerpt

The digital clock emitted a dull light that flashed every time Nate lifted his eyelids. And that’s just what Nate did. Every minute or so he found his eyes opening and taking in the dimness of the hotel room and the annoying light of the clock. It only added to his frustration as he watched the numbers slowly tick over.

He rolled to the other side and pulled the sheet over his shoulder, to ward off the chill of the air conditioning. His thoughts swirled as he contemplated Damien’s words from earlier in the evening. No matter how he looked at it, Nate couldn’t deny there was truth in what Damien had said. Nate did hide himself from everyone except Trish and Damien, and the few friends he had here in the city. Why hadn’t he told Jackson and Belinda? Was he concerned they wouldn’t understand? Was he worried they’d talk and the word would spread like wildfire? He guessed it was most likely he was used to not saying anything, and on top of that, it pissed him off that he, or any other person, should have to make an announcement about his sexuality.

With a rustle of the bedclothes, he turned to the other side, opening his eyes to see another few minutes had passed. He looked farther past the bedside table to the raised mound in the other bed, envious that Damien was obviously asleep.

Damien.

Just thinking about him brought a smile to Nate’s face. He probably looked stupid grinning in the dark, but he couldn’t help the warmth that filled him from being so close again. And it wasn’t just because Damien was gorgeous, although there was no doubt his dark good looks pushed all Nate’s buttons; it was the way he cared so much. Damien’s concern wasn’t just limited to Nate either. He was worried about Jackson and sympathetic to what Trish was going through, having spoken to her earlier in the day when Nate had been in the shower and unable to answer his phone.

“C’mon here, Nate.” The words were whispered in the quiet of the hotel room.

“Huh?”

“I can hear you thinking from over here. Get your arse over here.”

“I—”

“I promise to be on my best behaviour. I’ll just hold you, I promise. No mucking around.”

Nate didn’t need to be told twice. He scrambled from his bed and crawled under the sheet Damien held up for him. They lay there for a moment, both of them on their backs, staring at the dim ceiling. The only thing visible was the tiny green blinking light on the fire alarm.

Damien reached his hand out and grasped Nate’s. “I know I said this before, but it’ll be all right. You’ll see.”

Nate squeezed Damien’s hand. “Why am I so lucky to have you as a friend? After everything we went through—dating in secret, then hooking up a few times a year—I can’t believe you want to have anything to do with me. Then when I told you I didn’t want to see you anymore….”

Damien propped himself on one elbow, and Nate turned his head to look at him in the darkness. “You’re going to have to find a way to get past this, Nate. I can’t say I was always happy, but we were kids. Relationships start and fizzle all the time, especially long-distance ones. We were lucky we lasted those years before you headed to the city, let alone any of the time after that.”

“Lucky you didn’t kick my arse to the kerb, more like it.”

Damien chuckled. “Obviously I liked your arse enough to want to have it around, even if you only wanted to be friends with benefits or whatever.”

“You liked my arse, huh?”

“I still like your arse.” Damien leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on Nate’s lips.

The touch was fleeting, but enough to leave Nate craving more. Without a second thought, he chased Damien’s retreating mouth, capturing it with a kiss of his own. He licked across Damien’s bottom lip, and their tongues met as Damien opened his mouth to Nate. Nate deepened the kiss and put all his emotions into it. The kiss felt new and exciting but familiar at the same time, and a warmth settled in Nate’s gut. Damien pulled him in tight, drawing their bodies together. When Nate’s hard dick pushed into Damien’s thigh and pleasure simmered in his belly, he couldn’t hold back the groan. Yes, this is what I’ve been missing.

Becoming aware of what he was doing, Nate flopped back onto the pillow, his hand going to his mouth and tracing his bottom lip where Damien’s touch had been only moments before.

“D? What are we doing?”

“If I have to tell you, I’m doing something wrong.” The chuckle was soft in the darkness.

“You know what I mean. This. You and me.”

I hope you liked seeing a little piece of Runaway.

We know heroes can come in many forms. They can be men and women who risk their lives to save someone like a firefighter or police officer. They can be fighting in the military to ensure we enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted in our everyday living. They can be a stranger holding someone’s hand who has wrecked their car as they wait for the paramedics (another type of hero) to arrive to help them. They are there at times of need. They are selfless. They are considerate.

So what’s this got to do with Nic Starr’s new release? Not much really. I just wanted to say thank you to my best friend who has helped me over the past week that I’ve been absent from social media, despite having my own release to promote. Life can get the best of us sometimes and during those times we can feel the need to curl up in a corner and hide for a while. That was me the last few days. Nic was there and she listened patiently, always encouraging, even when I was being a whiny bitch for no discernible reason. She gets me. She even told me to pull my head out when that was what I needed to hear. So I’m sending a big heartfelt thank you to my bestie. *Big squishy hugs*

Now to Andrew’s promise. I’m not going to do a big review here, but I will say that this book made me fangirl all over Nic. Despite thinking Andrew was a bit of a douche in Charlie’s Hero, I loved him. I got him. I loved Tanner and when these two finally sorted their shit out? Magic. Sexy magic.  And who doesn’t love that?

Oh and Nic? If you see this I’ll try to be subtle.

*cough* Antonio *cough*

There. Now it’s out in the open you have to write it.

My review of Charlie’s Hero by Nic Starr (and the guest post that made me cry)

Many of you will know that Nic is one of my closest friends and I wanted to tell you about her first novel. Most of you will recognize her name and I can hear at least one of you say, “but she’s written other stuff.” Yes, she has, but they’ve all been novellas.

Charlie’s Hero is a full length novel, so that means paperback! Yay! Check it out below.

The Blurb…

Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It’s love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh’s reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him, puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh’s concerns, he can’t help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It’s not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn’t come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that he doesn’t need his parents to be part of a family.

Sounds good right?  It is. I mean, who can resist a school teacher and a paramedic? I loved Josh. He’s a dedicated paramedic, loves his job and his brother, Andrew. Josh is sort of closeted, but only when it comes to Drew. Charlie still loves his family even though they stopped loving him when he opened the closet door. I feel for Charlie, he’s such a sweet character. He moved back to his hometown because he wants roots and a stable life. This is such a sweet story that comes with a little angst, some hot, smexy scenes and a glorious HEA.

The best part about this story though, isn’t the story. It’s the journey the author has been on. I’ve read everything Nic has written, mostly as one of her beta’s but I’ve always read the final story as well. It’s such a joy to see Nic’s writing mature and improve with every release. I can count on Nic to give me a sweet story with little conflict. Dark and emotional is not her style. I can count on her to deliver a feel-good, pick-me-up read. Now Nic will be the first to tell you her first attempt at writing didn’t go so well. But trust me on this. If you enjoy Andrew Grey’s writing style, give this one a go. You’ll love it. Oh and if you’re one of those weird people that don’t like hot paramedics, wait till Andrew’s Promise comes out. When I read that I fangirled all over my laptop!

Now you’re probably wondering why I titled this post “the one that made me cry.” I told you earlier that Nic is my bestie. I asked her to send me an excerpt and anything else she wanted me to put on my blog so I could help promote her lovely book. That was last week and because RL got in the way I’ve only just seen what she sent me now. (She’ll kill me if I don’t include it, and maim me if I cut bits out.)

Here goes. *grabs tissues before I read it again*

A Message To A Friend

RJ asked me to visit her blog. She wanted to do a post about my latest book. She wanted to help celebrate the release of Charlie’s Hero. She asked for an excerpt or anything else I wanted to provide for a Guest Post.

I’ve just written ten guest posts for my blog tour so was temporarily out of ideas, but then thought… Why not just write from the heart?

So here is the post I’ve written specifically for RJ Jones. And yes, RJ, you must publish this as-is.

Dear RJ,

You have been on this writing journey with me since the very beginning. You are a key part of the journey, and I have no doubt I couldn’t have done this without you.

You were part of my life before my writing ever started. We chatted about m/m romance, discussed books and authors, and you joined me on my blog to share our love of the genre. You became a ‘real life’ person for me to interact with. We moved beyond Facebook, sharing photos, and personal stories. We still use Messenger to chat throughout the day, but now hardly a day goes by where we don’t share a phone call – sorry about the phone bill. J

Our friendship has evolved over the last eighteen months. You travelled across the country to stay for a weekend. I dragged my family across to Perth where we holidayed together. We met up again in Melbourne for Queermance – apologies for the snoring *wink*.

You have become a key part of my life. A true friend.

And part of that friendship has involved you holding my virtual hand as I continued writing. You knew of the doubts I had about my ability and offered nothing but encouragement and support. You picked me up and dusted me off, when some rough reviews of my first story knocked me to the ground, at the same time I was going through some tough times personally. You have listened to me bitch and moan (I know I’m usually a lovely person but editing can be tough J), and you have provided advice when needed. You make a great sounding board. You have read my stories, giving me praise to make me smile, but also giving me the not-so-pleasant opinions. You are invaluable.

I’m excited for the months ahead, to see the release of both Charlie’s Hero and its sequel, Andrew’s Promise, but also to share your publishing journey. This is the part where I do a plug for Black & Bluhe – such a joy to watch this story come to life and I know it’s going to be a huge success. Plus we have our big trip to San Diego and GRL to look forward to in October. I couldn’t think of a better person to be going on this adventure with.

I am grateful to have you in my life and am thankful for our friendship *big squishy hugs*

Nic

*sniff* SEE! That’s why I cried! (and she’s not online at the moment so I can’t tell her off!)

I love you too, Nic. Very much
